ROUND 1 - Bombers Vs Warriors 12:30 |
The season began disappointingly as the LBC Bombers crashed to a 12-30
home defeat against the Pagini Warriors giving an error laden
performnce. After the kick off the Bombers had the majority of the play
territorially but their goal kicking woes from last season continued as
two penalty kicks close to the posts were missed. Finally after 24 mins
the Warriors subjected the Bombers line to some pressure and a chip
kick and the following scramble saw them touch down for a 4-0 lead.
Kumul forward Porian Bal squeeze through several
tacklers and execute a nifty double movement that was credited as a
try, with the conversion stretching it out to a 10 point lead. The
Bombers hit back quickly as captain John Milba, easily the best
Bombers player on the day, forced his way over to bring the score back
to 4-10. From the restart another head high shot finally tested the
referees patience too much and as the Warriors thug was cooling down in
the sin bin the Bombers marched up field where centre Eke Ene found
space on the left to force his way over. The kick was missed as usual
but with the Warriors again under siege the half time siren came as a
relief to them.

So even though they were down 8-10 at half time the Bombers could be
reasonably satisfied, they had had more scoring chances in the half and
had finished the stronger. It wasnt to be though, a Warriors penalty
after 45 min stretched it out to 8-12. Disaster struck in the 57th
minute as full back Samson Ninge dropped a high kick which was
collected by the Warriors for a converted try under the posts, 8-18.
After 63 minutes an unscientific hoof upfield from the Warriors made a
freakish 90 degree turn in the in goal area for the Warriors player to
touch it down, pure spawn. The conversion made it 8-24 and the Bombers
looked thoroughly demoralised so it was no surprise when the Warriors
found plenty of room to score on their left four minutes later. That
was effectively game over. As the players tired the game became even
more error ridden, there was little excuse for the number of dropped
balls on a dry day with a firm pitch. Eventually after 77 minutes Russ
Kaupa Jnr, who had been the Bombers most penetrative back, got a
consolation try with a fine diving catch of a chip kick over the try
line. Needless to say the conversion was missed.

Overall a very disappointing start as missed opportunities and dropped
balls sabotaged their chances against a crude but effective Warriors
outfit. A big improvement is needed for their next fixture as they head
up to Goroka to play the Lahanis.
